Angel Encinas takes his Chandler City Council oath of office Jan. 12, 2023. A new council member and two second-termers will be sworn in, followed by a short regular meeting, in a 6 p.m. ceremony Thursday, Jan. 9, at Chandler City Hall.
An oath-of-office ceremony and a short meeting Thursday, Jan. 9, are all that the Chandler City Council has planned for its first public-meeting week of 2025.
Newly elected council member Jennifer Hawkins, along with incumbents who’ll start their second and final terms, Christine Ellis and O.D. Harris, will be sworn in at a 6 p.m. ceremony.
That will be followed by a short regular meeting.
Both events are set to take place in council chambers at Chandler City Hall, 88 E. Chicago Street in downtown Chandler.
There will also be a farewell ceremony for term-limited Mark Stewart in recognition of the end of his eight years on council.
A reception is planned for 4:30 p.m., at the Vision Gallery, 10 E. Chicago Street, across the City Hall courtyard from the council chambers.
The public is asked to RSVP online to the free events at chandleraz.gov/Installation to provide organizers a rough head-count number.
The oath-of-office ceremony will be livestreamed on the City’s website at chandleraz.gov/video and on youtube.com/cityofchandler. The event also will be broadcast locally on Cox Communications Channel 11 and Orbital Cable Channel 20 (Sun Lakes).
The ceremony will be followed by a council-only vote on which of six council members will serve as vice mayor for the rest of 2025.
The regular meeting only has three items on its agenda; two of those items are second and final adoptions of ordinances. One would approve an industrial zoning plan for a west Chandler property; the other is final adoption of the city’s Right of Way Temporary Use Management Program.
