The Chandler City Council awarded construction and professional service contracts, totaling more than $36 million, Sept. 18 in building a redundant 66-inch sewer line under Loop 202 at the Loop 101 interchange. The contracts also cover the rehabilitation of existing water and sewer lines that run under Loop 202.
In 2018, the city of Chandler dealt with a large water main break northeast of Price Road and the Loop 101 -Loop 202 freeway interchange. This water line was accessed, repaired and put back into service.
Findings from a subsequent water line assessment raised concerns about the large existing 66-inch sewer line that is adjacent to the water lines crossing under the freeway, according to a news release.
The Chandler City Council awarded construction and professional service contracts Sept.18 for a remedy in case such a similar problem happens with the sewer line in the years ahead, the release states.
Council approved a nearly $35 million contract with B&F Contracting Inc. for constructing a new 66-inch redundant (backup) sewer line located near the 101-202 interchange A related $2.4 million professional services contract was awarded to Wilson Engineers, LLC.
The primary sewer line conveys wastewater from north Chandler, south to the Ocotillo Water Reclamation Facility for treatment. It was installed at the same time as the water main crossing during the construction of the freeway interchange.
The city’s 2018 Water, Wastewater, and Reclaimed Water Master Plan analyzed both water crossing and the existing 66-inch sewer freeway crossing. The evaluation noted the lack of redundancy for the sewer system — crossing the freeway from north to south — and the need to rehabilitate the existing freeway sewer crossing.
The project scope of work consists of the new redundant 66-inch diameter gravity sewer line segment for about 700 linear feet, along with steel casing for protection under the Loop 202 freeway lanes.
There will also be modifications to the 48-inch diameter gravity lines and four junction structures, the release states.
The project will include rehabilitation, using cured-in-place pipe lining, of the existing 66-inch diameter sewer, 48-inch diameter sewer and 30-inch diameter sewer lines.
