An $874,500 contract has been approved for roadway reconstruction, curb, gutter and sidewalks in Haven Hollow in Apache Junction.
The City Council at a recent meeting approved the contract with Visus Engineering Construction Inc. for the work, which includes $79,500 in contingency funds.
Arizona Highway User Revenue Fund monies will be used to pay for the project. Construction is to begin in February with an anticipated finish of May 15, Project Engineer Raquel Schatz said at the council’s Jan. 17 meeting.
Sidewalks are planned only on the south side, she said.
“Now when we put sidewalks on one side, it’s mainly to help out with the drainage situation. Also we’re trying to work within a budget. We would love to put sidewalk and bicycle lanes everywhere in the city where council wishes to have. However, here, to try to minimize the cost, keep under budget, we have sidewalks just on the south side,” Schatz said.
Four bids were received. They were:
Visus Engineering Construction, $795,000;
PAP LLC, $908,383;
J. Banicki Construction $1,073,371; and
Combs Construction, $1,159,009.
With the $795,000 bid, $79,500 in contingency funds is added for any cost increases, Schatz said.
“Contingency is for unforeseen incidents that happen during the project. We may need to jog a sidewalk, we may have missed a mailbox, we may need to realign something — just something that was not caught in the design that the contractors caught out in the field. So we typically add a 10% contingency to all of these construction projects,” she said.
