Cesar Chavez: Balancing legacy against priorities

Posted

OPINON —I’ve been reflecting on the allegations surrounding Cesar Chavez and the legacy of the farmworker movement.

For me, this is not just history. It is deeply personal.

I come from a family of farmworkers and my family’s commitment to service and activism was shaped in part by this movement. Their sacrifices and belief in civil rights and justice helped lay the foundation for the community we stand in today.

With that history comes both pride and responsibility.

I honor the generations of farmworkers, families, and leaders who organized and fought for fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect —while also recognizing the importance of facing the realities of these allegations.

I want to acknowledge the courage of those who have come forward. You are heard, seen and your truth matters. It’s never too late for a voice to be recognized.

We seek accountability, healing, and growth as we move forward together.

Many in our community are holding complex emotions. It is possible to carry pride in a movement that has meant so much, while also confronting painful and troubling allegations.

I uplift the legacy of the farmworker movement built by countless workers, families, and organizers who came together in pursuit of dignity, fairness, and justice.

Their collective efforts created lasting change for the voiceless, rooted in unity and resilience, and that impact continues through new generations.

I remain committed to carrying that work forward with honesty, compassion, and a renewed dedication to justice for all people.

We must continue, as a community, to fight for the voiceless.
