This roadway flooding along Loop 202 at Cooper Road was temporary, though there was more permanent damage to at least a few structures in the city over the weekend.
Moderate damage seems the best way to describe the lasting effects of four-plus days of heavy rain in Chandler.
Chandler Police spokesperson Ryan Cody said he was briefed on Sunday’s response to the rainfall.
“Several roadways experienced flooding across the city,” Cody said. “However no hard road closures were needed. I’m told streets and public works did a great job pumping standing water from the roadways.”
Cody said westbound Loop 202 was closed for a short time at Cooper Road. That’s one of the few bowl-type spots along the 202 in Chandler. There was heavy flooding at the Copper underpass.
“Our (Chandler Police’s) only involvement was to help close those ramps until ADOT arrived,” Cody stated.
Elsewhere in the city, the Chandler Fire Department responded to a four-vehicle collision at Arizona Avenue and Elliott Road on Sunday morning, according to a media outlet, with two people taken to a hospital.
Iglesia Vida, a church near that same Arizona/Elliott intersection in the north part of the city, appeared to have a partial roof collapse that led to suspension of regular services, at least temporarily.
“The heavy rain this week caused damage to our church building, and we had to cancel yesterday’s services,” the church staff wrote on social media. “But Life Church has always been more than a building... we are a family! If you would like to support us to repair our building, you can donate through this link.”
Chandler Unified spokesperson Stephanie Ingersoll the school district's facilities team has been hard at work cleaning up what was left behind by the recent weather. Roof leaks, down trees and some flooding occurred.
