The Higley Unified School District Governing Board voted June 6 to accept the resignation of Superintendent Dawn Foley, effective June 30.
The board also voted to issue Foley a 5.33% performance pay bonus for meeting district goals.
The votes came after board members met in executive session for more than four and a half hours to take legal advice related to Foley’s resignation. The votes were unanimous with Board Member Kristina Reese absent.
The acceptance was granted subject to finalizing an agreement.
Foley was not present at the meeting and was unavailable for comment. The board did not appoint an interim superintendent.
Foley was elevated to superintendent from associate superintendent following the retirement of Mike Thomason in 2021. She was selected in 2020 to replace Thomason and was de facto superintendent that school year while Thomason used his unused paid leave and vacation time going into his retirement.
Foley served two stints in Higley USD. She spent six years as director of curriculum and instruction in the district before moving to Mesa Public Schools in 2014 as director of teaching and learning in the state’s largest school district.
She returned to Higley USD in 2019 as K-12 educational services assistant superintendent and was promoted to associate superintendent in June 2020.
Foley was originally given a two-year contract that was to expire June 30, 2023, with a base pay of $195,000. The board passed an amendment to her contract in 2022 that extended her contract through June 30, 2025.
Her salary for fiscal year 2022-23, which ends June 30, is $208,650.
