Chandler Police went 3 times to juvenile facility over weekend, report states

Posted

The Chandler Police Department responded to multiple calls over the weekend of July 25-26 to a behavioral-health center for teens, according to a report.

Just after 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 26, the report states, officers responded to the Oasis Behavioral Health facility, located in a neighborhood near Warner Road and Arizona Avenue, for reports that "several juveniles" had pulled a fire alarm and were attempting to leave the building.

Upon arrival, officers assisted staff in returning those who had left, to their rooms, the report states.

About one hour later, the PD stated, police were called back after the juveniles again activated the fire alarm. Officers attempted to restore order, but those involved were noncompliant, the report states.

During that incident, officers deployed pepper-ball rounds to saturate the area in an effort to regain control of the situation.

Facility staff reported that multiple patients assaulted others, including a supervisor, the report states. As a result, five people were arrested and booked on charges related to the assaults.

One of those people was also booked on an additional charge of resisting arrest.

No officers were injured during the incident.

At about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, officers responded to this facility for reports of juveniles pulling the fire alarm, causing damage and attempting to escape.

Neighboring law enforcement agencies were called to assist due to the large number of patients who had reportedly left their rooms. Officers were able to gain control of the situation and arrested one person for charges related to disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Nobody was transported for medical treatment and no officers were injured, the PD stated.

Chandler Police are working closely with the facility to increase security measures in an effort to prevent these types of incidents in the future, the department stated.

"From our end, these measures include but are not limited to proactive patrol on-site," the report states.
