A Sept. 17 Chandler City Council proclamation reading was in honor of September being ovarian cancer awareness month.
Councilmember Christine Ellis, a former nurse, read the proclamation, which included some grim statistics. Those included ovarian cancer as the fifth-leading cause of death among American women.
The chance of an American women being diagnosed with ovarian cancer at least once in their lifetimes is 1-in-91, she said, and the chance of an American woman dying of the disease are 1-in-143.
According the American Cancer Society, an estimated 20,000 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year, with more than 12,000 deaths expected from the disease.
On hand for the reading were ovarian cancer survivor Rachel Sackett Putman and her husband, Brandon, as well as Chandler resident and cancer survivor Sandra Marinella.
Marinella said Sackett Putman has done an excellent job of getting proclamations read about ovarian cancer and encouraging women to get screened earlier for potential earlier diagnosis.
