Arizona could get sizable chunk of new $100B TSMC investment

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced it would expand its investment in the U.S. by $100 billion Monday, which is expected to go toward three additional manufacturing centers, two advanced packaging facilities and a research and development center, the company said during a White House press conference.

The Monday announcement brings TSMC’s U.S. investment grand total to $165 billion.

In Phoenix, TSMC Arizona had committed to build three fabrication centers in north Phoenix before Monday’s announcement. The second Phoenix fab is scheduled to begin volume production in 2028 and the third fab in Arizona is expected to begin production by the end of the decade, according to a TSMC Arizona spokeswoman.

In January, TSMC Arizona officially began producing its wafers at the first fabrication center in north Phoenix.

The TSMC Arizona spokeswoman would not confirm whether the additional centers and money would come directly to Arizona from the additional investment.

But President Donald Trump hinted Arizona could get a sizable chunk of the recently announced financial contribution with TSMC investing in U.S. “over a short period” of time.

“I think, mostly, it’s going to be in Arizona, which is what I understand,” Trump said during the Monday press conference at the White House.

TSMC Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei appeared with Trump at Monday’s press conference.

Phoenix has built a strong semiconductor ecosystem, said Chris Camacho, president and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council.

“This additional commitment from TSMC reflects the strength of our region to catapult vital technologies and will further position Greater Phoenix as an internationally recognized leader of next-generation innovation,” Camacho said.

Initially, TSMC and Phoenix officials signed a development agreement that brought the semiconductor manufacturing center to northwest Phoenix on March 31, 2021.
