Russell: Gifts, food given to families part of ‘putting smiles on kids’ faces’

Posted

We had a great time this year for Christmas. With a combined effort from Superstition Mountain Promotional Corp., Apache Junction Elks Lodge No. 2349 and Goldfield Ghost Riders, we were able to help eight families.

Each child got shoes, outfits, jackets, jammies and about three toys along with many family games.

Thank-you to everyone who helped wrap all the presents. The families also got a full ham dinner and desserts.

Mr. & Mrs. Claus along with some elves delivered the gifts to each home on Christmas Eve. The kids were so excited to see Santa arrive. He had a special story as he gave them each a candy cane. They got to open one gift with him and the rest were placed under the tree.

Every parent was so very thankful. One texted me thank-you for blessing her family and that she has not seen her daughter smile like that since her Dad was around. Then there was this very cute little girl who got up in the middle of the night to write a letter to Santa saying “she bin good this year” then got up in the morning to put her prettiest dress and shoes on while she waited for Santa to arrive.

“Putting smiles on kids’ faces” --- It’s what we do.

Editor’s note: Sandie Russell is a volunteer with the Lost Dutchman Days Committee, which donated funds made at the annual rodeo to nonprofits and children’s charities. The committee has the motto of “putting smiles on kids’ faces.”
