‘Prospector Way,’ careers, personal development classes suggested

Posted

“The Prospector Way” may be a new class for Apache Junction High School students in 2020-21, along with courses focusing on career exploration and personal development.

Adding the classes for the high school, 2525 S. Ironwood Drive, was discussed at the Apache Junction Unified School District Governing Board’s March 24 meeting with no decision made.

‘Prospector Way’

“The Prospector Way” would be a freshmen-only program for freshmen new to AJHS who struggled in junior high school or whose parents requested the class, AJHS principal Dr. Christopher Lineberry said in a document given to the Governing Board.

Nominations to the class would be taken from Cactus Canyon Junior High School for the first-semester course.

“Any freshmen who fail a class first semester will receive the class second semester. This was a class offered previously that is being offered again to help with freshmen success,” according to the document from Dr. Lineberry.

Parts of the class include learning the campus; what’s expected and how to behave for success at AJHS; reading “Seven Habits of Highly Successful Teenagers”; and learning “The Prospector Way,” which includes:

  • What is a Prospector?
  • Who is who at AJHS?
  • Finding success in high school, respect, courtesy,
  • Advocating for yourself.
  • Working with adults and peers.
  • Asking for help and giving help.
  • Organizing for success.

“Students and teachers will monitor grades, attendance and discipline for students in this class. Videos, participation in service projects, getting in a club or attending athletic events will be included,” according to the document from Dr. Lineberry.

Career exploration

The career exploration program recognizes the value of a successful school-to-work transition, Dr. Lineberry said.

“Juniors or seniors can earn a total of 1.0 credits for the completion of work hours (128) plus written coursework and verification from the employer,” the document states.

Personal development

The personal-development class would be required of freshmen in the alternative program and possible sophomores who did not take the class their freshman year.

“This is the book part of our Prospector transition course for freshmen that we are bringing back next year. It is a non-online course for our alternative kids that want something to break away from all day online,” according to the document.
