The Fry’s Grocery Store at 150 E. Old West Highway in Apache Junction was evacuated New Year’s Eve after police confirmed a man had a suspicious device — liquid in a jar with wires coming out the top.
Apache Junction Police Department’s 911 Center received a call at about 4:30 p.m. Dec. 31 from a concerned citizen reporting that there was a man in front of the Fry’s Grocery Store with what appeared to be a homemade bomb.
The reporting party described the device as a small jar containing liquid further reporting that the device had wires coming out of the top of the jar which were connected to a battery, Cpl. Marshall Harshman, AJPD public information officer, said in a release.
“AJPD officers responded to the area and observed from a distance a man handling a device like the one reported to the 911 AJPD dispatch. Officers on scene determined that the device did look suspicious and the decision was made to evacuate people out of the store for personal safety,” the release states. “Officers made contact with the man and were able to verbally separate him away from the suspicious device. After the officers further questioned the man it was discovered the device was not an explosive device and the store was reopened. No charges were filed against the man.”
