Merissa Mendoza has been appointed as Pinal County director of public health, having served as interim director since last February.
She began her Pinal County career in public health almost 13 years ago, working in the WIC program. She has work as a nutritionist, breastfeeding coordinator, nutrition program supervisor, and division manager for nutrition and vital records, according to a release.
Mendoza has a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics from Arizona State University and a master’s in public administration from Grand Canyon University. She holds the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant credentials.
She was appointed to the interim role at the encouragement of the outgoing director, Dr. Tascha Spears. She is being appointed to the permanent role based upon the support and across-the-board recommendations of her entire leadership.
According to Deputy County Manager MaryEllen Sheppard, “Merissa represents what we look for most in our county leaders. A person of the highest ethical character who is respectful, empathetic, and who consistently and compassionately focuses on taking the best possible care of each other and our community. When the public health leadership team was asked how they would rate Merissa on these attributes, without hesitation, they responded, ‘That’s her!’”
Mendoza also has a culinary degree at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute, and she enjoys baking, reading, and spending time with her husband and two children.
