March events in Apache Junction include stamp mill demos, Fit Families Dino Day

From stamp mill demonstrations (March 5, 12, 19 and 26) at the Superstition Mountain Museum to Fit Families Dino Day (March 7) at Flatiron Park and Preschool University (March 17) at Apache Junction Public Library, there’s a lot going on in Apache Junction. Events include:

  • NON-FICTION BOOK CLUB: 1:30-3 p.m., Tuesday, March 3 at the Apache Junction Public Library, 1177 N. Idaho Road. Held every first Tuesday of the month for adults. Go to ajpl.org for book titles.
  • SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN RAILROAD: Runs Thursday through Sunday until Mother’s Day 2020 at Superstition Mountain Museum, 4087 N. Apache Trail. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the small train set runs in the barn with the Lou Oates video of the Big Trains and docents on the railroads in Arizona.   • STAMP MILL DEMO: 1-1:45 p.m., Thursdays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26 at the Superstition Mountain Museum, 4087 N. Apache Trail. The restored Cossak 20-stamp ore mill will be running.   • FREE LECTURE SERIES: 2-3 p.m., Thursday, March 5 in the Superstition Mountain Museum Amphitheater, 4087 N. Apache Trail. The ninth lecture of the series, a representative of The Tonto National Forest, Cave Creek Ranger District, will speak about how the district prepares for each fire season, addressing steps taken when a fire occurs, and the recent Woodbury Fire in the Superstition Mountains.   • CARPE DIEM STRING QUARTET: 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 6 at Gold Canyon United Methodist Church. Gold Canyon Arts Council brings the Carpe Diem String Quartet, which is amongst the most sought-after chamber ensembles offering Gypsy, tango, folk, pop, rock, and jazz-inspired music with “indie” string quartets arranging and performing various music.   • COOKING CLASS: 9 a.m.-12 p.m., March 7 at the Superstition Mountain Museum, 4087 N. Apache Trail. Russ and Susan Richins, of Rocking Rr Chuckwagon, teach “Introduction to Dutch Oven” cooking at the amphitheater. Authors of a Dutch oven cookbook, they have conducted classes and demos for 15 years.   • I RUN 4 AJ: 8:30-10:30 a.m., March 7 in the downtown area paths, trails, and parks. Benefiting Apache Junction High School Boys’ Basketball, join AJ Parks and Recreation and AJHS Athletics for the running/walking series to enjoy a 5k route with two mile out and back routes available.   • FIT FAMILIES DINO DAY: 4:30-6:30 p.m., March 7 at Flatiron Park, 100 N. Apache Trail. Go back in time and discover what the world was like in the Jurassic age. Dig up old bones, go on a scavenger hunt and more. This event is for ages 10 and under and a care giver. Remain at the park for the movie following the free event.   • HATS ON: 10-11 a.m. March 7 and 21 at Superstition Mountain Museum, 4087 N. Apache Trail. Retired teacher Dan Johnson is in the Elvis Chapel presenting American history with an interactive, live time-line program, portraying 21 themes covering the past 1,000 years using more than 35 historical hats and dress styles, old U.S. flags, artifacts and period music.   • USED BOOK SALE: 9 a.m.-4 p.m., March 7-8 at the Superstition Mountain Museum, 4087 N. Apache Trail. Used books of all genres, record albums, CDs, DVDs and puzzles will be displayed on tables on the patio and priced to sell. Tickets will be on sale for various raffle prizes.   • FROM PHOENIX TO PURITY TO POTSHOT: 6-7:30, Wednesday, March 11 at the Apache Junction Public Library, 1177 N. Idaho Road. Writer in Residence James L.   • KITES: 10-11 a.m., Friday, March 13 at Flatiron Park, 100 N. Apache Trail, Apache Junction. Preschoolers can decorate kites to take home. The library and Parks & Rec team up to offer a morning of stories, activities and crafts for Read & Rec @Flatiron Park.
  • MAGIC OF MEXICAN ARTISTRY: 9 a.m.-4 p.m., March 13-15 at the Superstition Mountain Museum, 4087 N. Apache Trail. In addition to artists’ pottery demonstrations and sales exhibits, the fiesta includes new additions of mariachi music and dance, and storytelling performed by Mesa sculptor, mask maker and musician Zarco Guererro. Carving and painting techniques from Oaxaca to be showcased, plus centuries-old dyeing and weaving techniques in traditional Zapotec weaving, and handmade silver jewelry. Free admittance and parking.

  • BIRDS OF THE SONORAN DESERT: 10-11:30 a.m., Saturday, March 14, at Apache Junction Public Library, 1177 N. Idaho Road. Vera Walters, an experienced presenter will teach teens and adults, in the North Wing Program, about the birds of the desert, including their songs, what they look like, and how they get along in this desert world.   • QUILT SHOW: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 14, in the Golden Vista Resort Ballroom, 3710 S. Goldfield Road. The “Colors in the Wind” quilt show has more than 100 quilts of all sizes, wall hangings, home decor, wearables and accessories on display.   • JERI SAGER IN THIS BROAD’S WAY: 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 27 at Gold Canyon United Methodist Church, 6640 S Kings Ranch Road, Gold Canyon. Veteran of Broadway, known for her portrayal of “Grizabella” in “CATS,” Ms. Sager also portrayed “Fantine” in Les Miserables, “Eva Peron” in Evita, and worked on other theatrical productions from City of Angels to West Side Story; plus worked with the USO and performed for two presidents and even Pope John Paul II.
