• FOR THE LOVE OF TURQUOISE: 2:30-3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21 at Apache Junction Public Library, 1177 N. Idaho Road. Carrie Cannon will present “For the Love of Turquoise,” a talk exploring a long tradition of distinctive cultural styles, history, and transition of the stone with a long tradition amongst the Native, southwest cultures, holding profound meanings to specific, individual tribes. • CLOSE CALLS WITH DEATH: 2-3 p.m., Jan. 23 at Superstition Mountain Museum (Amphitheater), 4087 N. Apache Trail. Former Green Beret Sgt. JJ Pelletier, a desert safety/survival instructor and former professional poker dealer, tells of his close calls with death. Dogs welcomed. Bring lawnchairs. • NEW FRONTIERS OPEN HOUSE: 1-3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 at Mesa Community College Red Mountain Campus, 7110 East McKellips Road, second-floor Community Room in the Mesquite Building, Mesa. New Frontiers for Lifelong Learning will hold an open house for the peer-led organization sponsored by MCC. Test, grades and/or credits not required for classes at various campuses and community locations. Registration begins Jan. 28 online. The organization has social events including tours, lunches, concerts, outdoor hiking, theatre productions and more. Members receive MCC student ID cards allowing student discounts on the campus in the community. Fees are $60 for each semester or $80 for the year. A tribute to the “world’s greatest rock band,” Led Zeppelin fans will appreciate members of Led Zepplified Ken Ronk (Robert), Jared Bader (Jimmy), Jeff Garten (Bonzo), and Kenny Pacini (Jonsie) emulating Led Zeppelinesque experiences with the sounds, visuals, and vibe of a Led Zeppelin concert. Teton Ken presents “The Lost Dutchman and His Mine.” He and his mules spent hours in the Superstition Mountains searching for the Dutchman’s treasure; packed many a “Dutch-hunter,” with hiker and film crew in the Superstition and Goldfield Mountains.
