“The need for food assistance has surged over the past year, and when families struggle to eat, their pets often feel that strain as well. Many people even make the heartbreaking choice to feed their pets before feeding themselves, highlighting just how deep the crisis has become,” according to a release.
The neighbor’s pantry program is powered by the nonprofit’s grocery rescue program, which recovers fresh, nutritious food from local grocery stores that would otherwise go to waste, it states in the release.
More than 50% of the food United Food Bank distributes comes from this program, including fresh produce, dairy, meats, bakery items and shelf-stable goods.
