Apache Junction getting its first electric police bicycle

The Apache Junction Police Department has received $83,800 in grants from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety that includes money to buy its first electric bicycle.

A Trek electric police bicycle will be purchased out of $11,800 awarded to fund bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement overtime expenses, AJPD Lt. Seth Painter said during an Oct. 5 council work session.

“It will be the first electric police bicycle in Apache Junction history,” he said. “So the bicycle — we were awarded $4,800 out of that amount. So it’s essentially the cost of one complete police bicycle.”
