Apache Junction HS thespians debut musical comedy ‘Spamalot’ Feb. 16-17

Apache Junction High School student thespians tackle the Crusades in a fun and irreverent way for the production of “Spamalot” at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 and 17 at the Performing Arts Center, 2525 S. Ironwood Drive in Apache Junction. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. The box office opens at 6 p.m. on both days.

Spamalot is a quirky version of the legendary tale of King Arthur’s quest to find the Holy Grail. Inspired by the classic comedy film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the musical is a slightly revised version of the original Broadway script that has been edited to make the show more producible for high school troupes, according to a release.

Book and lyrics are by Eric Idle and music by John DuPrez and Eric Idle. Spamalot is presented through special arrangement with and all authorized performance materials are supplied by Theatrical Rights Worldwide. Local vocal direction is headed by Michele Iglewski, music direction by Sandra Leen and Karl Hermann. The performance includes a live student orchestra conducted by Karl Hermann.

The production will feature award-winning designs created by AJHS Student Tiffany Hutcheson who recently received two Superior ratings — one for costume design and one for costume construction — at the East Regional Festival on Jan. 21. Katherine Davis, who is cast in the role of Sir Gallahad, received a Superior rating in solo musical at the same event.

AJHS emphasizes a well-rounded education where academics, sports and extracurricular activities allow students to grow scholastically, physically and emotionally. AJHS graduates have access to more scholarships per student than in most communities in the Valley and qualifying students have access to Promise for the Future to earn a tuition-free education at Central Arizona College, the release states.

Registration for all new students who wish to enroll in Apache Junction Unified School District schools are currently being accepted at all school locations. For information about AJUSD or its schools or departments, go to ajusd.org.
