300 attend April Pools Day event

Elliott Anuta, Apache Junction Parks & Recreation Department recreation coordinator for outdoor programs and aquatics, answered some questions for the Independent about the recent April Pools Day event held at Superstition Shadows Aquatic Center.

Were you happy with the turnout to April Pool’s Day? How many adults and children attended?: This year we had about 300 people in attendance at April Pools Day. From that I would say 100 were adults and 200 were children. The city of Apache Junction was very happy with the turnout of community members interested in learning more about water safety.

What did people in attendance say about the event?: People in attendance are very thankful for the resources that are given out during the event. Some community members learned CPR for the first time. Others found about scholarship opportunities to have free swim lessons at Superstition Shadows Aquatic Center. Most of the children enjoyed being able to get inside a boat or police car. They also enjoyed being able to swim after a long winter of no water.

What agencies were on-site in addition to Superstition Fire and Medical District and StandUp AJ? : This year we also had Apache Junction Police Department, Arizona Game and Fish, and Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

From your perspective, why is it important to teach water safety and the other instruction offered at April Pools Day?: Water safety education is a huge component in battling drownings in Arizona. Whether it is a backyard pool, a lake or a city pool, the more tools someone has on the belt the better we can stop something that is 100% preventable. The resources that people received at April Pools Day can be used by almost anyone and can help save a life.
