Kimes Ranch Western Derby returns to WestWorld of Scottsdale

The Kimes Ranch Western Derby, an 11-day showcase featuring a variety of cow horse competition, is returning May 29 through June 8 to WestWorld of Scottsdale.

The derby is free and open to the public, according to a press release.

“The (National Reined Cow Horse Association) is excited to return to Scottsdale for our fifth year to host the Western Derby,” Emily Konkel, the organization’s executive director said in the release. “Not only are we looking forward to welcoming over 3,000 competitors and fans to this year’s event, but we want to encourage the Phoenix Metro community to come out and experience the best cowboys and cowgirls in the country compete in this unforgettable western experience.”

The event will feature the limited-aged derby for 4-and-5-year-old horses that compete through herd work, rein work and fence (cow) work.

Throughout the week, the preliminary rounds of competition will determine who will return for the clean-slate finals on June 8. The Western Derby features ten divisions to suit all levels, from million-dollar riders in the Open, entry-level competitors in the Non Pro and Boxing, and every level of competitor in between.

The event will also host the Holy Cow Performance Horses CD Survivor Open Bridle Spectacular, featuring many of the industry’s seasoned and successful older horses that are in the bridle vying for $25,000 in added money through herd, rein and cow works. The Intermediate Open Bridle Spectacular has $5,000 added.

In addition to the limited-aged event, a full slate of horse show classes which feature added money that totals over $103,250. This includes the Open and Non Pro Two Rein Spectaculars, Non Pro Bridle Spectacular, Non Pro Boxing Spectacular and two Youth Spectaculars.

Finally, athletes and spectators can look forward to The Run For A Million Cow Horse Challenge qualifier, founded by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan. Qualifiers from the Kimes Ranch Western Derby will go on to compete in the Million Dollar Competition in Las Vegas in August. During the August event, the competition will include Cow Horse Challenge, Cutting Horse Challenge, Youth Reining Challenge, Youth Working Cow Horse Challenge, Rookie Level 1 Challenge, Rookie Level 2 Challenge, Non Pro and Amateur Challenge, Open Shoot Out, Cowboy Heritage Ranch Challenge, and Riggin’ Rally.

A vendor village will feature western goods like hats, boots and jewelry. Local western retailer and title sponsor Kimes Ranch will also have a display of premium western goods. Concessions will be available through WestWorld alongside a rotation of local food trucks.
