Winner emerges with ‘vengeance’ in Kyrene spelling bee

Posted

It took six rounds and 105 words for the winner to be declared this week at the Kyrene Middle School Spelling Bee.

Isabelle Garcia is the champion after spelling “affiliate” correctly in the final round and “vengeance” as the championship word to clinch the title, according to a release.

Garcia is a seventh-grade student at Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School.

There was a three-way tie for second place among students from three Kyrene elementary schools. All four students will advance to the Maricopa County Regional Bee in February in Mesa.

In addition to Garcia, those qualifying for the county competition are:

  • Shaye Cormican (grade 4), Kyrene de los Cerritos Leadership Academy.
  • Pepper DiGrazia (grade 5), Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary School.
  • Hamza Muhammud (grade 5), Kyrene de las Brisas Elementary School.

Twenty-five Kyrene spellers competed in the bee after winning their individual school spelling challenges.
