Tempe residents with professional expertise in architectural history, archaeology, architecture, historic preservation law, history, landscape architecture or related fields are encouraged to apply for an open seat on the city’s Historic Preservation Commission.
The vacancy is for a professional member who will help guide efforts to protect and preserve Tempe’s historic places.
Commissioners play a vital role in safeguarding the city’s historic built environment and rich cultural resources, a responsibility that supports the cultural identity and economic vitality of our community, according to a release.
This appointment will fill the remainder of a partial term, which runs through March 31, 2026. The selected member would be eligible for reappointment to a full three-year term beginning in April 2026.
Duties include attending monthly meetings and making recommendations to the Tempe City Council. Commissioners are also tasked, in part, with:
Making recommendations to the Development Review Commission regarding designation of landmarks, historic properties and historic districts.
Reviewing and making decisions on applications for proposed alterations, new construction, demolition or removal that may impact landmarks, historic properties or properties located within a historic district
Cooperating with representatives designated by property owners in historic districts to develop design guidelines for alterations and new construction
Regular meetings are typically held at 6 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month.
