Tempe police make arrests in shooting death of 5-year-old

Multiple arrests have been made in the death of a 5-year-old who was shot while inside a vehicle on March 17, Tempe police said.

Authorities provided few other details in order “to maintain the integrity of this investigation,” a Tempe Police Department release stated on Friday.

For the last week, investigators have worked “around the clock to find those responsible" for the shooting death of the 5-year-old and critical injuries sustained by two other juveniles.

All were shot at about 11:45 p.m. March 17 near West Broadway Road and South 52nd Street. Police responded to the scene and found an occupant of one vehicle had fired shots at another vehicle.

The victim vehicle contained one adult and six juveniles and was traveling eastbound on Broadway Road from 48th Street “when the suspect vehicle began shooting at the victims. The suspect vehicle immediately fled the scene prior to PD arrival,” police said at the time.

“Since this tragedy unfolded, Tempe Police officers and investigators from multiple units have worked around the clock to find those responsible,” the March 24 release stated.

The arrests were made with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force, police said.

“Our investigators are continuing their painstaking efforts, remaining laser-focused on finding justice for the victims and their families.”
