Tempe PD steps up patrols as pool equipment thefts rise

Posted

Automatic pool vacuums and robotic cleaners have become targets for thieves in Tempe, and police said they are increasing patrols in the most affected areas of the city.

The equipment, which can cost up to thousands of dollars, makes "them easy and appealing items for quick grab-and-go thefts," according to the May edition of the  Tempe Police Department's newsletter.

In many cases, police said, the thefts happen in the early morning or late at night when yards are quiet and homes are dark.

The Tempe Police Department offers these tips for residents to protect their property:

  • Bring it in: If possible, store pool equipment in a locked area when it’s not in use.
  • Lock gates: Many thieves are walking into unlocked backyards. A lock can go a long way to have them not target a property.
  • Light it up: Motion-sensor lights can be a deterrent for anyone sneaking around.
  • Check cameras: Those with security cameras should make sure they are working and positioned toward the yard and gate areas.
