A Tempe officer was shot in the leg Friday night and the 32-year-old man who police say pulled the trigger is dead following a chase near Rural and Baseline roads.
The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident that began when the suspect, who had a warrant out for his arrest for drug sales, was spotted at the Circle K just south of the intersection, police said.
The suspect was in a car when he saw police vehicles, authorities said. He drove across Rural Road and onto Lamplighter Lane with officers in pursuit.
The man got of his vehicle and, as officers exited theirs, he fired a gun, striking one of the officers.
Officers returned fire, killing the suspect.
An investigation into the officer-involved shooting is underway.
The suspect and officer have not been identified.
