Tempe, Mesa events raise money this week for traumatic brain injury research

Posted

East Valley businesses Dixxon Flannel Co. and Cider Corps are partnering with the national 22 Jumps project this week for a series of fundraising events dedicated to spotlighting advances in veteran-based research on traumatic brain injuries.

Events in Tempe and Mesa will be capped off with the 4th Annual 22 Jumps in Arizona on the Echo Canyon Trailhead at Camelback Mountain, which is open to the media.

All three will raise money for 22 Jumps and its initiative with Cohen Veteran Bioscience, a nonprofit.

Cohen Veteran Bioscience’s work is “fast-tracking development of diagnostic tests and personalized therapeutics for the millions of veterans and civilians suffering from the effects of trauma-related and other brain disorders,” event organizers said in a release.

Los Gringos in Concert will begin the fundraising from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 at the Dixxon Flannel Showroom, 7200 S. Priest Drive, Tempe. Open to those 21 and older,  the cost is $22.

Guests will sample ciders and beers from local craft brewers while listening to Los Gringos. Food trucks will be on site, and Dixxon will release a special 22 Jumps flannel for separate purchase.

From 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, the Speakers Dinner for Traumatic Brain Injury Solutions will take place at Cider Corps Taproom, 31 S. Robson, Mesa.

The event is $200 for those 21 and older.

“An intimate evening at Cider Corps in Downtown Mesa will pair dishes from the Valley’s top chefs with the veteran-owned cidery’s craft beverages,” the release said.

Researchers from Cohen Veterans Bioscience will share updates on their work “Advancing Solutions for Brain Trauma from Theory to Therapeutics.”

Tickets for the Tempe and Mesa event can be purchased at https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/22-jumps-in-arizona-2023-1596709

A media event will cap of the three days of information and fundraising when veterans Tristan Wimmer and Chris Carnahan of the 22 Jumps Project will each complete 22 BASE jumps off Camelback Mountain – each jump symbolic of the 22 U.S. active duty and veteran service members who succumb to suicide each day, according to the release.

It will be the fourth year of jumping from Camelback for Wimmer, who founded the 22 Jumps Project after losing his brother and fellow Marine to suicide.

22 Jumps is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that uses BASE jumping as a fundraising platform to support the development of short-term and long-term TBI solutions. 22 Jumps was established in 2020
