Tempe honors 2023 traffic fatalities this weekend

Tempe is honoring the 24 people who died in 2023 as a result of traffic accidents.

Tempe is placing displays at the intersections closest to where traffic fatalities occurred to remember and honor the 24 lives lost on Tempe streets in 2023, from Nov. 15 through Nov. 18.
The displays will commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday, Nov. 17, a city release explained.
WDR is a global event to remember the many millions who have been killed and seriously injured in traffic crashes and to acknowledge the suffering of all affected victims, families and communities. This is the sixth year Tempe has placed displays in honor of WDR.
In 2023 Tempe had 50 serious vehicle collisions which resulted in 24 deaths and 34 others being seriously injured, the release stated. The memorial displays for the 24 victims can be found at:

College Avenue and Alameda Drive
Priest Drive and Fifth Street
University Drive and Dorsey Lane
Priest Drive and Grove Parkway
Rio Salado Parkway and Packard Drive
Southern Avenue and Country Club Way
Willow Drive and Elliot Road
Elliot Road and Los Feliz Drive
Rural Road and Lakeshore Drive
Southern Avenue and Clementine Drive

Mill Avenue and Apache Boulevard

In 2018, Tempe became the first city in Arizona to adopt a Vision Zero goal, implementing a plan to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious-injury crashes in 2019, according to the release. For more on Tempe’s Vision Zero goal, visit tempe.gov/VisionZero.
