The deadline to apply for Tempe’s $1,000 Dolores Huerta Scholarship has been extended to March 17.
This scholarship, sponsored by Chicanos Por La Causa, honors the legacy of Dolores Huerta, a civil rights icon and lifelong advocate for social justice, a city release explained.
Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers union alongside César Chávez in 1962, advocating for the rights and dignity of farmworkers, the release noted. She is credited with the empowering rallying cry “Sí, Se Puede!,” which has become a symbol of resilience and hope.
In 2012, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President Barack Obama.
The Dolores Huerta Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors in Tempe who demonstrate exceptional leadership, community organizing, civic engagement or policy advocacy, according to the release. High school seniors living in Tempe or attending a Tempe Union High School District school are eligible for the scholarship.
How to apply for the scholarship:
Applications must be received by Monday, March 17. Please allow extra time for mail delays, the release noted. For all details, visit tempe.gov/doloreshuerta.
