Beyond the Shop is a national movement designed to foster mental health advocacy in marginal and underrepresented communities.
Through the local Beyond the Shop initiative, the city of Tempe, in partnership with the city of Chandler and Downtown Tempe Authority, aims to enhance mental health resources for those in need, according to the release.
Tempe Vice Mayor Doreen Garlid said in the release that they are thrilled to bring this proactive mental health approach to Tempe and Chandler.
“Through the friendly influence of barbers and stylists, we are helping to transform the narrative around mental health and foster a healthier, more resilient future for our residents,” Garlid said.
Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke also said in the release that this collaborative effort with Tempe reinforces the city’s commitment to creating a supportive and compassionate environment for all residents.
He added that barbers and stylists are pillars of the community, offering a space for people to feel comfortable and connected.
“Through this initiative, we’re empowering these trusted professionals to become advocates for mental health and wellness,” Hartke said.
Local barbers and stylists also have two more ways to get involved in their communities.
