Suspect in Scottsdale officer shooting is shot, killed in Tempe by Phoenix police

The suspect being sought in the shooting of a Scottsdale police officer was shot Saturday in Tempe and arrested, authorities said.

Phoenix police officers shot Kenneth Hearne, 37, near Baseline Road and Lakeshore Drive as they were attempting to arrest him, officials said.

Hearne was taken to a hospital after the shooting in serious condition. Police later confirmed he died.

Police were looking for Hearne since the Friday night shooting of a Scottsdale police detective who was shot while serving a warrant in downtown Phoenix.

The officer is recovering from his injury.

The suspect in the shooting was considered armed and dangerous, Scottsdale Police Chief Jeff Walther said Friday.

Scottsdale officers were serving the warrant Friday night at an apartment near 1st Avenue and Roosevelt Street in Phoenix and were met and the door by a woman and child, the chief said.

Officers were told no on else was in the apartment, and the woman and child were removed from the unit.

Detectives entered the apartment and saw a someone in a hallway who ducked into a room, according to Walther.

The person fired through a wall, and a bullet struck a Scottsdale detective sergeant in the lower abdomen, the chief said.

Officers returned fire, and the suspect left the second-floor apartment through a window, police said.

Walther did not disclose details of the search warrant but said the person being served had violent offenses.
