Sun Devil Campus Stores mark one year of eliminating single-use plastic bags

Posted

In July, the Sun Devil Campus Stores celebrated one year since eliminating their use of single-use plastic bags at all store locations.

In line with ASU’s sustainability goals and vision, Sun Devil Campus Stores is projected to conserve 40,000 single-use plastic bags by the end of 2024, a press release stated.

“It’s a huge win for Sun Devil Campus Stores to help ASU achieve their zero waste goal,” Jeffrey Stufflebeam, director of Sun Devil Campus Stores, stated in the release.

According to Stufflebeam, the bags the stores previously used were already environmentally friendly, being made from 100% post-consumer materials.

“This next step has only made us more sustainable,” he stated.

One single-use plastic bag emits roughly 3.5 lbs. of CO2e, equivalent to driving five miles, in a gasoline powered car, according to the release. In total, Sun Devil Campus Stores will save about 140,000 lbs. in emissions or 200,000 driver miles, equal to circling the world eight times, with its elimination of single-use plastics.

Guests are encouraged to use a reusable bag for their purchases or leave the store with their items without any bag at all, the release stated.
