Shalimar Golf Club owner Dick Neuheisel dies at 88

Posted

Local business owner and former Tempe City Councilmember Richard “Dick” Neuheisel recently died at the age of 88.

A March 29 report stated that Neuheisel, who was also known in the community for founding Tempe Sister Cities and the Tempe Oktoberfest, had died.

Along with founding Tempe Sister Cities, he had taught law classes at Arizona State University, opened his law firm, and owned and operated the Shalimar Golf Club with his wife Jane Neuheisel.

Tempe Mayor Corey Woods wrote in a social media statement that Neuheisel was “a true Tempe treasure.”

“From his service as a Tempe City Councilmember, founding the internationally-recognized Tempe Sister Cities program, and steadfast leadership in countless other nonprofit organizations and charitable causes, he leaves behind a tremendous legacy of public and community service,” Woods stated.

He went on to say that the community mourns his loss and that their hearts go out to his family and friends.

District 4 Congressional Rep. Greg Stanton also released a statement online about Neuheisel’s death, echoing similar condolences to Neuheisel's loved ones.

“An Army veteran, former ASU instructor, and longtime leader of the Tempe Kiwanis club, Dick Neuheisel’s life was defined by selfless public service,” Stanton stated. “As a city councilman, he pioneered so many Tempe institutions — like the Sister Cities program to provide humanitarian aid while connecting local students to global opportunities, and the iconic Tempe Oktoberfest.”

Tempe Sister Cities allows high school students to study abroad in one of the 11 sister cities that the program works with internationally. Neuheisel led the Tempe branch until 2019, after serving as president for nearly 50 years, according to a local report.

Sister Cities International, the parent organization dedicated to facilitating these cross-cultural exchanges, also released a statement mourning the death of Neuheisel via social media.

“Today we give thanks to Richard "Dick" Neuheisel for everything he did for both Tempe Sister Cities and Sister Cities International,” it stated.
