Mint Cannabis breast cancer fundraising drive benefits 'Check for a Lump'

Posted

Operators of the Mint Cannabis marijuana dispensary aim to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise funds Aug. 27-Oct. 15 for local breast cancer nonprofit Check for a Lump.

Against the backdrop of pandemic-delayed screenings, nearly 6,000 new cases of breast cancer — along with 900 deaths — are expected in Arizona this year, making the need for urgent screening and support services more important than ever before, according to a release.

From Friday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Oct. 15, any customer 21 and older who donates a new or gently used bra at any one of the Mint’s three dispensaries in metro Phoenix will receive a free pre-roll; those who donate 10 or more bras will receive a breast cancer awareness T-shirt. There is a limit of one free pre-roll and one free T-shirt per customer per day.

The bras will be donated to Check for a Lump, which receives cash for each bra donated. The goal of the fundraising drive is to collect at least 4,200 bras for the nonprofit, the release states.

During this seven-week campaign, the Mint will also donate $1 from every pre-roll sale to the cancer nonprofit. All Mint locations will also share information about how to participate in Check for a Lump’s Pink Out 5K walk/run planned for Saturday, Oct. 2, at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix.

The Mint kicked off the fundraising drive with a “bra-raising” celebration with Check for a Lump and breast cancer patients/survivors who were slated to string bras across the Mint’s Tempe/Guadalupe dispensary parking lot the morning of Aug. 27. A mobile mammography screening is also be set up in the parking lot of this location on this day, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Mint will hold several breast cancer screening events in collaboration with Check for a Lump. Screenings will take place in a mobile mammography bus. Patients can call 480-967-3767 or 800-285-0272 to pre-register for a screening. The mobile screening events will take place:

  • Friday, Aug. 27, at the Mint’s Tempe/Guadalupe dispensary, 5210 S. Priest Drive, Guadalupe, 85283;
  • Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Mint’s north Phoenix dispensary, 17036 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix 85032; and
  • Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Mint’s Mesa dispensary, 330 E. Southern Ave., Mesa, 85210.
