Downtown Tempe to celebrate Juneteenth

Event will take place on June 19

The ultimate historical exploration and celebration of Black joy will bring energy and excitement to Downtown Tempe in honor of Juneteenth. This free local event, taking place in CenterPoint Plaza, allows people of all races and ages to come together and share in that joy collectively.

Highlights of the festivities include interactive education, live music, line dancing, food and drinks, as well as a glimpse into Black history. Attendees will have the opportunity to shop a collection of local Black-owned businesses and witness the talent of local Black artists in a Black Art Showcase featuring original, one-of-a-kind works available for purchase.

Visitors can also gather information for the betterment of the Black community by visiting with representatives from local Black nonprofit organizations.

With its central location, vibrant character, and plenty of heritage to celebrate, Downtown Tempe is a preeminent Valley gathering spot, ideal for bringing together those who embrace the history and vitality of the Black community.

“CenterPoint Plaza is a natural gathering place in Downtown Tempe,” said Kate Borders, Executive Director of the Downtown Tempe Authority. “With the Juneteenth Celebration, we’re establishing this prominent destination as a space of education, comradery and shared joy.”

The Juneteenth Celebration is being presented as a partnership between the City of Tempe and the Downtown Tempe Authority.

“Commemorating Juneteenth celebrates the abolition of slavery in our country, the diversity of our city, and the steps we have taken to ensure Tempe is a welcoming, inclusive community. We are proud to partner with Downtown Tempe Authority for this event,” said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods.

The event will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on June 19 at 660 S. Mill Avenue, at the corner of Mill and University Drive.
