Commemorate loved ones at Tempe History Society celebration on Dec. 1

Posted

The community is invited to Tempe History Society’s 24th Annual Larry Campbell Tree of Lights celebration on Sunday, Dec. 1, an opportunity to honor loved ones in a heartfelt way this holiday season.

Attendees can purchase limited-edition custom ornaments to be displayed on one of two festive trees in the lobby of the Tempe History Museum, a city release explained.

One tree is dedicated to honoring friends and family members, living or deceased, and the other pays tribute to veterans. Each ornament is personalized with the name of the honoree, making it a thoughtful way to celebrate their memories, the release stated.

The veteran’s ornament, inspired by the presidential seal, features an eagle with a U.S. shield, clutching an olive brand and arrows to represent the four branches of the armed forces. The non-veteran ornament depicts a Christmas cactus strung with colorful lights and a banner that reads, “Tempe, Arizona.”

A third ornament showcases Tempe’s historic Petersen House, a storied landmark built in 1892.

Ornaments are available for a donation of $20, with proceeds supporting the museum’s work. Ornaments can be shipped for an additional $5. A stock ornament tagged with a recipient’s name is available for a $10 donation.

The Tree of Light Celebration will take place from 2 to 4 pm. on Sunday Dec. 1, at Tempe History Museum, 809 E. Southern Ave. This free event will feature light refreshments and music for the season.

The late Larry Campbell, former president of the History Society, established the Tree of Lights tradition in 2001, leaving a legacy of remembrance and community spirit that continues to brighten the holiday season year after year, the release detailed.

Order forms for ornaments, with illustrations, can be found at tempehistory.org/tree-of-lights.
