Cinnaholic opens 2nd Valley location in Tempe

Vegan, allergy-friendly dessert comes to Tempe Marketplace

Posted

Tempe Marketplace just got a sweet new tenant.

Cinnaholic, a vegan, allergy-friendly cinnamon roll shop, just opened its doors at the outdoor shopping mall on May 20. It’s the second Valley location for the franchise operation.

Vikas Mittal, the Cinnaholic franchisee responsible, opened his first location in Westfield, New Jersey in 2019 after feeling burnt out after working for over a decade as a Wall Street investment banker. Mittal grew up in Tucson and knew Arizona would be the perfect place for his new endeavor. He and his family have since made the permanent move to Phoenix.

“My parents live here in Mesa and every time we’d come and visit them, we’d always end up at Tempe Marketplace,” he said. “This is the place to be apparently. So when this [Cinnaholic] opportunity came through, this is where I wanted to be. This is one place I do know does really well in Phoenix. It’s a fun environment. Our location here is perfect because we’re in the middle of it all.”

The Tempe Marketplace location comes shortly after Mittal opened a Scottsdale location at 9220 East Vía de Ventura, Suite 118. It was the first location of the franchise in Arizona.

Cinnaholic offers six signature cinnamon rolls, including the best-selling Cookie Monster, which is topped with mountains of cream cheese frosting, edible cookie dough, chocolate chips and drizzled with chocolate sauce. There’s also the Old Skool, a classic cinnamon roll with vanilla frosting. Guests can also build their own with 20 different kinds of frostings and toppings. Cinnaholic also sells freshly baked vegan and dairy-free cookies, brownies and Dole Whip. A special protocol is in place for those with nut allergies.

“It serves a market that there aren’t too many options for,” he said of vegans. “It’s amazing how appreciative people are when they come in and they’re like ‘I can’t get dessert anywhere else.’ We serve a niche of the market that’s underserved. It’s a healthier lifestyle and it’s environmentally friendly. Our brand stands against cruelty to animals and things like that, which is important to us.”

Tempe Marketplace said it’s a great addition to its restaurant and food offerings, which includes a Lou Malnati’s coming this fall.

“They fill a void in our merchandise mix and further enhance our food offerings,” Heather Edge, Tempe Marketplace Marketing Director, said. “It's a unique and delicious product that is not available anyplace else in the center.”

Mittal said other Cinnaholic franchisees are staking their claim in the Valley as well, with locations planned in Mesa and Peoria, among others. He’s also planning to expand his growing cinnamon roll empire.

“I do have a third location that we’re thinking about,” he said. “I don't have anything concrete but I did sign up for a third rotation.”
