The Tony Award-winning musical “The Color Purple,” based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, will open a run in Tempe in October.
Black Theatre Troupe will stage the inspiring story from Friday, Oct. 18 through Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway. The stage work is based on the book by Marsha Norman with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
The stirring musical chronicles the journey of Celie, a young African American woman in the early 20th century South, who overcomes adversity, discovers her inner strength, and finds her voice. The story’s themes of resilience, empowerment make it one of the most beloved musical theater experiences.
The show is directed by Karen Jones with musical direction from Brenda Hankins.
The cast of performers brings Walker’s characters to life through choreography and a score that blends gospel, jazz, blues, and ragtime.
“‘The Color Purple’ is more than just a story of survival; it’s a story of the triumph of the human spirit," Jones shared in a press release. "We are excited to bring this emotional, uplifting musical to the stage for our audiences."
Xea Goolsby brings the lead character Celie to life.
"This role is a gift,” she stated. “Celie’s journey from brokenness to wholeness is a reflection of so many untold stories, and it’s an honor to be part of a production that speaks to hope, healing, and community."
Black Theatre Troupe was founded by Helen K. Mason in 1970 as a space for underserved artists to share the Black experience.
