ASU Prep Tempe introduces hybrid learning program for high school students

A revolutionary high school experience that puts students in control of their own learning is coming to Tempe, prioritizing purpose over grades, passion over pressure and progress over conformity.

ASU Prep Tempe powered by The Levitt Lab, is located in the heart of Arizona State University’s Tempe campus, and the tuitionfree- public school is now enrolling students in grades 9-12 for fall 2025.

ASU Prep Tempe powered by The Levitt Lab — created in partnership with renowned economist, author and professor Steve Levitt — offers a reimagined version of high school with a simple purpose: awaken the natural wonder within every student, nurture their curiosity, and empower them to think critically, act boldly and lead confidently, a press release stated.

The Levitt Lab was born out of the idea that education needs to fundamentally change today so young people can flourish tomorrow.

Levitt, who also is the author of the award- winning “Freakonomics,” said in the release that as a father and an educator, he has seen how the education system fails students.

“By obsessing over grades and traditional curricula, we fail to cultivate the curiosity and creativity that kids need to thrive in our rapidly changing world,” Levitt said.

At ASU Prep Tempe, the structure promotes balance, engagement, resilience and connection so students can rediscover the joy of learning, according to the release. They gain skills that reflect a modern way of life, from financial literacy to data analysis.

Additionally, students can earn college credits through ASU’s concurrent enrollment program, getting a head start on higher education and career pathways.

The hybrid learning model uses a mastery-based approach that allows students to accelerate and personalize their learning. Core courses and in-depth exploration projects are completely flexible; students can learn at their own pace and set their own schedule.

Seminars and “wonder sessions,” offered with a few flexible time slots weekly, give students the opportunity to dive into thought-provoking discussions and hands-on exploration to build curiosity and critical thinking, the release detailed.

Amy McGrath, ASU vice president of educational outreach and managing director of ASU Prep, said in the release that as a public college preparatory school, they believe all students can succeed through new models, like ASU Prep Tempe powered by The Levitt Lab, by removing barriers so students can pursue their passions.

“At ASU Prep Tempe, students have the freedom to choose what they learn by selecting topics and courses that align with their interests and goals, and they have access to interactive tools and support tailored to their individual needs,” McGrath said.

Students are supported by guides who focus on growth, ideas and goals rather than scores and grades, according to the release. Each student is paired with a dedicated guide who serves as a mentor throughout their experience.

Guides work collaboratively with students to set academic and personal goals, then develop strategies to help them achieve these goals and explore new passions.

ASU Prep Tempe powered by The Levitt Lab is ideal for high school students who are ready to take charge of their education and see school as a place to grow, explore and discover, not just a series of boxes to check, the release stated.

The curriculum is a good fit for learners who are curious and inquisitive, driven and self-motivated, collaborative and open-minded, creative and bold. Enrollment is open to students entering grades 9-12 who are on track to graduate.
