ASU celebrates veterans with annual Salute to Service events

Arizona State University's annual Salute to Service celebration to honor all who have served, including military and civilians, will begin Nov. 1 and run until Nov. 11. This year's theme is "Salute to Service Through Service."

ASU schools, units will host various free events for the public and the university community across all Phoenix metro campuses. Events include:

  • Joint ROTC Run, Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 6 a.m., Old Main, Tempe Campus. All Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC cadets will assemble for a brief ceremony before departing on a massive formation three-mile run that will begin at Old Main and end at the rear of Sun Devil Stadium. 
  • Arizona Military Leaders Panel/Luncheon, Friday, Nov. 4 at 12 p.m., Old Main Tempe Campus. Military commanders from Arizona installations will provide perspective during a panel discussion titled "How Are Military Services Adapting to New Domains of Warfare, Specifically Cyber and Space?" A second panel with their enlisted leaders will follow at 1:15 p.m. discussing "The Give and Take of Service."
  • Salute to Service Reception with Jack McCain keynote, Friday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m., Armstrong Hall, Tempe Campus. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences hosts its annual reception. Navy helicopter pilot Jack McCain, son of the late senator John McCain, will give remarks and share his stories of family and service during the event themed "Honoring Families with Legacy of Service."
  • "The Balconist" Gus Farwell Concert, Friday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m., Gammage Auditorium, Tempe. Former ASU quarterback and Pat Tillman teammate Farwell, who became a viral sensation by singing opera from his apartment balcony in Barcelona, Spain during the pandemic lockdowns, will perform Broadway, opera and pop tunes during this unique show.  
  • ASU vs UCLA football game, Saturday, Nov. 5, time TBD, Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe. F-35 Lightning II jet fighters from Luke Air Force Base are expected to help kickoff the Salute to Service football game with a flyover. The pilots include Reservists, active duty and aviators from the Norwegian Air Force. Various recognitions honoring service will occur during the game. 
  • Sparky's Touchdown Tailgate, Saturday, Nov. 5, three hours before football game, College Avenue, Tempe. The ASU Alumni Association-hosted tailgate features live music, beer garden, giveaways, special appearances by Sparky and the Sun Devil Marching Band. This tailgate will be military themed with static military vehicles, and military members promoting their service branches and mingling with the public. 
  • Dean's Cup Flag Football Tournament, Sunday, Nov. 6 at 10 a.m., Tempe Campus multipurpose field on Dorsey Lane.  Army, Navy ROTC and the Pat Tillman Veterans Center team will battle it out in an attempt to take the Dean's Cup from defending champion Air Force ROTC in this annual tradition. 
  • Ambassador panel discussions on service, Monday, Nov. 7, various times, West, Downtown and Polytechnic campuses. Michael Polt, former U.S. Ambassador to Serbia, Estonia and Montenegro, and Army Lt. Gen. Ben Freakley, who commanded the legendary 10th Mountain Division and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, will lead an insightful discussion on service. They will be joined by faculty and others who have served, including Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers (at West Campus) and U.S. Representative Greg Stanton (at Polytechnic).
