Arizona universities eye 3% tuition increase

Posted

Arizona's three state universities are looking to hike tuition rates by 3% for the 2023-24 school year, keeping them in line with previous hikes.

In letters to the Arizona Board of Regents, officials at Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona laid out their reasons for tuition increases as well other fees including meals and housing.

ABOR is the state board that oversees the three universities and would need to approve any increases in tuition.

At ASU, the 3% fee is across the board for undergraduate and graduate resident students, with college fees also capped at 3% growth. The university also plans to raise costs at residence halls and meal plans by 10% or $100, whichever is great.

ASU's current tuition is $10,978 for undergraduate residents and $29,952 for nonresidents.

NAU officials also plan a 3% tuition increase, but have rolled out its Access2Excellence program this fall which would provide full tuition to students with a household income of less than $65,000 annually.

“These resources ensure we are investing in programs like A2E that increase the number of Arizona resident students participating in higher education, especially from underserved and rural communities,” said President José Luis Cruz Rivera in a statement. “In addition, the small tuition increase — coupled with continued cost containment efforts — provides the resources necessary to invest in talented faculty and staff, impactful services and excellent academic programs that together will boost completion rates, improve post-college outcomes aligned with Arizona’s workforce needs and power upward mobility and social impact for all students at NAU.”

NAU's new base tuition would be $11,352 for residents and $27,600 for nonresidents under the proposal.

In Tucson, the University of Arizona also are proposing a 3% undergraduate tuition increase, which would only impact incoming students. Those already at the unversity will be locked into their current rates. The university also is planning a 4% increase in non-resident undergraduate tuition.

"It remains a priority of the University of Arizona to keep tuition increases as low as possible for our students and their families, while ensuring that we are able to carry out our education, research and land-grant missions," said University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins in a statement. "I am pleased that most of our students will not see an increase in tuition next year, and the increases for the incoming class are well below inflation rates to minimize impact."

The university also has planned maximum growth rates for meal plans at 5% and 7.5% for residence halls annually through 2029.

Current UArizona tuition is $12,404 for undergraduate residents and $35,153 for nonresident students.
