Tempe is offering a volunteer opportunity for seniors to help young school children become better readers.
The AARP Foundation Experience Corps program allows adults to invest time and encouragement each week “helping change a child’s future,” a release stated, adding no special skills are needed.
In-person information sessions are planned through April. The next session is 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the Cypress Room of the Tempe Public Library, 3500 S. Rural Road.
Volunteers need to attend one information session. No registration is required.
There are 110 tutors serving 15 schools.
“Parents of the children served by the city often express their gratitude for the one-on-one tutoring,” the release state.
“Said one parent, ‘This program has helped my child read a lot better and understand what she is reading. Thank you much for helping my daughter with her reading.’"
