A woman and a 2-year-old-girl died as a result of a wrong-way fatal collision Wednesday night along northbound Loop 303 in Surprise, authorities said.

The two-vehicle accident occurred at approximately 8:54 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3. at milepost 116, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

"The wrong-way driver was reported southbound in the northbound lanes. The vehicle collided head-on with a second vehicle shortly after it went (the) wrong-way," DPS officials stated in a release. "The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, an elderly female, was pronounced deceased on scene. "

The woman driver of the other vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Two small children were passengers in the northbound vehicle. One child, a 2-year-old girl died at the hospital. The other child, an 8-month-old, is in serious condition, authorities said.

According to DPS, it is unknown whether alcohol was a factor in the collision, which closed Loop 303 near Grand Avenue until just before the Thursday morning commute.
