Willow Canyon has developed a top high school wrestling program in Surprise.

Before the 2023-24 season started, longtime Wildcats coach Shane Tamez answered questions about this year’s boys and girls teams.

What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? The team’s best attribute entering this season is being organized about weight classes and being close and supportive like family.

What are some weight classes that will need to be shored up for the season to be a success? Some weight classes that would need to be shored up for the season to be a success are some of the varsity weight classes that have freshmen occupying them or any lower classmen that want to wrestle.

Who are your team leaders? The team leaders are Mateo Valencia, Sebastian Zieba, Leilani Marin, and Heaven Norman.

Who are the newcomers to varsity that can make the biggest impact? The newcomers to varsity that can make the biggest impact are Boys: Hayden Martinez, Brennen Betancor, Brody Stewert, Alejo Canchola, Daycen Knight, and Girls: Leilany Rivas and Maddie Underwood.

What are some of the more anticipated matches and tournaments on your schedule? For both girls and boys the most anticipated matches are Senior Night and at least one Home match against another school. For girls the most anticipated tournaments are at Buckeye High School, Marana High School, Sectionals, and State. For boys the most anticipated tournaments are at Peoria High School, Sectionals, and State.
