The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Northwest Valley Branch is celebrating its 40th anniversary of leadership for women this year.
The AAUW is the nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls. Since being founded in 1881, members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day, including education, social, economic and political.
AAUW’s mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy. It provides the opportunity to join a circle of women intent upon breaking through educational and economic barriers to enable women and girls to enjoy success in their professional, community and personal lives. Membership is open to anyone holding an associate’s, bachelor’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
The Northwest Valley Branch was granted official recognition by the AAUW in 1980. Originally formed as the Sun City West Branch, the name was changed to the Northwest Valley Branch in 2002 with members from Peoria, Glendale, Sun City West, Sun City Grand, Surprise, Sun City, El Mirage, Buckeye and Cave Creek. Members include both full-time and winter residents. Several members maintain dual membership with their home state.
The Northwest Valley Branch is currently the second largest AAUW branch in Arizona. Membership chair is Linda Styrwoll at 218-259-4437.
