West Valley Preps' Surprise girls golf preview

Posted

The high school girls golf season began this week at schools across the state.

West Valley Preps, the Goodyear Independent and Surprise Independent asked local high school coaches about their teams. Here are their responses:

Dysart Demons

  • Coach: Dustin Borst (thid year)
  • Region: Developmental Section I (girls)
  • Who are your top returning golfers? We lost three to graduation last year so that left us with one sophomore Alyssa Blandford.
  • Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? None
  • What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? We have a lot of time to improve
  • What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Individual goals are to improve every practice and continue to improve every round. With COVID going on this year, it really took away my ability to recruit girls at school. I knew I had to ramp up my recruiting this year since we only had the one coming back. I am hoping we can make this a successful year and recruit heavy next year.

Valley Vista Monsoon

  • Coach: Steven Trezzo (sixh year)
  • Region: Division I Southwest/Yuma
  • Who are your top returning golfers? Megan Eaton, Meagan Gatz, Kaleb Bay and Lizzy Jensen. I am so proud of these ladies and their dedication to the game. They will have their best year ever.
  • Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? Nikki Bowen and Kaylie Mumford. Impact is huge in that they have been playing for years. They have tremendous care and consideration for the game. Golf is a passion that burns bright in these two freshmen athletes.
  • What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Best attribute has to center around academics first. These kids understand that their studies, no matter virtually or in-person, come before their sport so that they are freed up to enjoy the game and lay the foundation for a future with possibilities.
  • What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Apart from excelling in our academics, goal one is to hopefully make it through the season with enough matches to qualify for state. Some districts have canceled their season making it more difficult to meet the minimum criteria for qualification. The past five months has had an impact on all of us in one way or another. These athletes are so thankful to have at least what appears to be a season. The mitigation measures in place are worth the long wait to get out of the house and compete. Our first match was canceled due to the heat, however we are hoping for the hottest summer in Phoenix history to subside soon and get back to what we love.
