West Valley Preps' Surprise baseball preview

Posted

Feb. 26 marked the beginning of the high school spring sports season. West Valley Preps asked local baseball coaches to take a look at their teams:

Dysart Demons

4A Black Canyon Region
Coach: Francisco Miller (First year as Dysart head coach)
2024 Record: 12-7-1, 7-3 region
Who are your top returning players? My top returning players are Juan Anaya, our ace pitcher, Eduardo Carranza, who has a good bat, Jermaine Johnson, and Angel Chavez.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? The team’s best attribute is hard work, and working as team.
What will your team need to improve for the season to be a success? Our team needs to come together, bond, and play for one another as a family.
Who are your team leaders? My team leaders are Juan Anaya and juniorJustin Hernandez-Olaiz.
Who are newcomers to the varsity squad that could make an impact? My newcomers this season are Justin Hernandez-Olaiz, freshman Javier Hernandez-Olaiz and freshman John Amparan. They are making an impact.
What needs to happen for your squad to reach the state tournament this season, or reach the goals the program has set? We need to work together as one and learn from every game we play to strive to succeed.

Shadow Ridge Stallions

6A West Valley Region
Coach: Christopher Hoth (fourth year as head coach)
2024 Record: 12-19, 7-3 region

Top returning players? Zack Coots, Ryan McAfee, Owen Gorman, Ashton Trumble, Weston Eubanks and Anthony Salgado.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Being able to deal with adversity, to never give up and have a great team culture
What will your team need to improve for the season to be a success? Just gaining knowledge, we have a young team and things are going to move fast. Being able to slow the game down.
Who are newcomers to the varsity squad that could make an impact? Juniors Kael Leon and Payton Sheinin.
What needs to happen for your squad to reach the state tournament this season, or reach the goals the program has set? This group is going to have to deal with adversity and be able to keep a positive mindset.

Willow Canyon Wildcats

5A Northwest Valley Region
Coach: Austin Byler (second year as head coach)
2024 Record: 10-17, 5-7 region
Top returning players? Ethan Patrick 2026 catcher, Cameron Davidson 2026 SS/RHP, KJ Kovaly 2025 RHP/3B and Jackson Duce 2025 RHP/OF.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Pitching for sure. Our pitching staff is very deep this year and is exciting.
What will your team need to improve for the season to be a success? We will need to hit good pitching consistently and do it well... that will be our biggest obstacle this season.
Who are your team leaders? My team leaders are Juan Anaya and juniorJustin Hernandez-Olaiz.
Who are newcomers to the varsity squad that could make an impact? Kodi Carlson, transfer from Liberty. Malachi Lemau and Deegan Deporte, both freshman.
What needs to happen for your squad to reach the state tournament this season, or reach the goals the program has set? We will need to continue to attack the strike zone and play clean defense to give our offense a chance to win ball games. If we take care of the baseball, we should be in every game this year. Offensively, situational hitting and small ball will allow our team to go further than any other season if we are able to execute at a high level.
