West Valley Preps' Surprise boys golf preview

Posted

The high school boys golf season began this week at schools across the state.

West Valley Preps and Surprise Independent asked local high school coaches about their teams. Here are their responses.

Dysart Demons

  • Coach: Thomas Vesey (sixth year)
  • Region: Division II Section III
  • Who are your top returning golfers? Junior Vincent Torres, senior Alfred Lancaster, junior Diego Quintero and junior Keyton Poundstone.
  • Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? Two freshmen, Austin Henderson and Christopher Espinoza.
  • What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? They have great attitudes and don’t give up.
  • What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Goal is to be consistent and have fun. Our goals haven’t changed. I want my kids to enjoy the game of a lifetime. I’m 68 and have been playing since I was 11 years old. I love the game and hope to play well into my 80s.

Shadow Ridge Stallions

  • Coach: Scott Lihs (fifth year)
  • Region: Division I Southwest
  • Who are your top returning golfers? Mekhi White, Andrew Chayrez, Gavin Lepinski and Clayton Spangler.
  • Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? No one new but one of our sophomores, Noah Gregory, has greatly improved since last year.
  • What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Veteran leadership, with four seniors who went to state last year.
  • What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Return to state as a team but our fifth spot is the wildcard, so worst case send 3-4 individuals to state.  Covid-19 luckily hasn’t effected golf, courses have been open for play and my motivated players have been playing all summer.

Willow Canyon Wildcats

  • Coach: Nick Manganiello (second year)
  • Region: Division II Section VI
  • Who are your top returning golfers? Our top returning golfers are seniors Johanan Unchiasu, George Fronsman, and Tristen Hall.
  • Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? In the short time that we have had to practice, we have had a few begin to stand out. Junior Naysa Smith and freshmen Robert Laizure, Austin Loose and Owen Davidson. They have all played golf in the past, and with three of them being freshman, we are looking forward to developing them even more over the next four years.
  • What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? The upperclassman really helps out the new/younger players when they are in need or looking for help. Our three seniors have a lot of match experience which will help the underclassman when they play their first couple matches. We have a very good team relationship that is like a family. I think that really helps with team morale and makes them know that they won’t be left behind.
  • What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Our team goals this year are to be more competitive in matches and hopefully win a few more than we did last year. We also want to take a run at the district cup, as long as it happens of course. For the individuals, we want to send our seniors out on a high note and hope they can get their lowest scores of their high school careers. It would be good for them to be competitive and hope they can qualify for state. As for the underclassman, we want them to get as much experience as possible and carry that with them into their future seasons.
