Venom heading to Las Vegas for nationals, raising funds

Posted

Goodyear-based Venom Volleyball Club has been around for 10 years and the girls had never competed in the national circuit, until now.

The founder of the club, Jimmy Gonzalez, asked coaches Kris Smith and Steven Ortiz if they could coach their first national team. Venom Gold 13N competed all year long and on May 25 night got a call that the club made the national tournament.

The club will head to the tournament in Las Vegas on June 29 and return July 3.

This small club out of the West Valley was not expected to compete for a national bid. Venom is one of  only two 13s team coming out of the West Valley, the other being AZ Epic 13s Nationals.

For information on ways to donate to the club for its trip, call
480-688-4332. Donors can also visit this GoFundMe page.

The club is family oriented and tries to make the costs affordable for the family. The girls attend four different schools in Goodyear — Belen Soto, Copper Trails and Westar elementaries, and Western Sky Middle School.

Here a list of players and the school they attend:

• Alyssa Ortiz — Copper Trails
• Reina Smith — Western Sky
• Essence Gilmer — Western Sky
• Mackenzie Rubel — Western Sky
• Sophia Zimmerman — Western Sky
• Addyson Fullerton — Belen Soto
• Alyssa Munoz — Belen Soto
• Payton Murray — Westar
