Unofficial results show shakeup in Mesa District 2 while other incumbents hold

Posted

Editor's Note: This story has been updated to reflect the most recent update of unofficial results as of Aug. 7.

Unofficial results show the Mesa City Council will largely remained unchanged with the exception of a change in District 2.

Unofficial results from the Maricopa County Elections Department showed Julie Spilsbury ahead of incumbent Jeremy Whittaker by almost an 11-point margin. That gap has narrowed  from 12-point in earlier unofficial results.

Other early results included Mayor John Giles and District 1 councilmember Mark Freeman with commanding leads while District 3 councilmember Francisco Heredia ran unopposed.

The Elections Department released the unofficial results at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. Furthermore, the city has released its unofficial results.

Unofficial breakdowns include:

  • Incumbent John Giles, with 56,910 votes cast, ahead of Verl Farnsworth, with 28,118 votes cast, in the mayoral race with 83 of the 84 polling places reported.
  • Incumbent Mark Freeman, with 9,447 votes cast, ahead of Danny Ray, 4,258 votes cast, in the District 1 City Council race with 13 of the 14 polling places reported.
  • Julie Spilsbury, with 7,959 votes cast, ahead of incumbent Jeremy Whittaker, with 6,398 votes cast, in the District 2 City Council race with 10 of the 11 polling places reporting.
  • Incumbent Francisco Heredia garnered 9,723 votes cast in his unopposed race in District 3 with 11 of the 12 polling places reported.

If the results hold, the Mesa City Council will lose its member that has fairly consistently voted against Mr. Giles on numerous issues including the ASU at Mesa City Center project.

Independent Newsmedia will continue to update the story as it progresses.
