Work to widen and improve 163rd Avenue in northwest Surprise will require traffic restrictions along sections of the road intermittently from March 13 through April 14.
Initial paving will begin on a third northbound lane from just north of Grand Avenue to Pat Tillman Boulevard resulting in the following traffic restrictions:
Starting at 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 and ending at 5 a.m. on Friday, March 14:
Starting at approximately 1 to 2 a.m. Monday, March 17 and ending in the late evening Thursday, March 20:
Initial paving and striping will begin on northbound 163rd Avenue from San Ysidro Road to Happy Valley Road, which will result in two additional travel lanes for northbound traffic and a dedicated right turn lane at the Happy Valley Road intersection.
The intersection will also be reconfigured and paved to allow for east and westbound traffic across the intersection.

While this phase of work will be complete April 14, drivers can expect north- and southbound lane restrictions on 163rd Avenue through mid-summer for work on medians, drainage and lighting improvements.
However, the city will work to maintain two travel lanes in each direction at all times.
Final paving of all additional lanes will be completed in late fall 2025/early winter 2026 after all road work, median work, lighting and traffic signals have been completed along the 163rd Avenue corridor.
